The HMRC mileage log that records your drives for you

Milepost is a UK mileage log for iPhone. It notices when you drive, logs each trip in the background, and works out your claim at the right HMRC rate for each tax year.

About ten seconds a day

Milepost does the recording. You say which trips were for work, and it keeps the totals.

  1. Drive as normal

Milepost notices when you set off and logs the trip in the background, without you opening the app.

  2. Swipe to classify

Swipe right for Business, left for Personal. Add the purpose, and Milepost suggests it next time you drive that route.

  3. Export at tax time

Share a PDF or CSV mileage log for the tax year with your accountant, or use it for your own return.

Everything a mileage log needs

Built for UK sole traders and for employees who use their own vehicle for work.

Records drives automatically

Milepost uses your iPhone's location and motion to spot a drive, records the route, and ends the trip once you've been stopped for three minutes.

A Detection health screen shows if a setting is getting in the way, and a missed-trips check compares the last 7 days of motion history with your log.

Fix any trip

Split a trip that included a stop, merge two that should be one, move a start or end point on the map, or correct the distance. Your reason is kept in the trip's notes.

HMRC rates by tax year

55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles from 6 April 2026, 45p before that, then 25p. The 10,000 miles count across all your cars and vans, and a trip that crosses the line is split.

Employee mode

Enter what your employer pays per mile and Milepost works out the gap you can claim as Mileage Allowance Relief, for this tax year and the previous four.

PDF and CSV for your accountant

A mileage log for each tax year with the date, start and end postcodes, purpose, miles and HMRC rate of every business trip. There's also a quarterly summary for bridging software.

Add trips yourself

Type a postcode or address and Milepost works out the distance by road. Round trips are one tap, and you can go back to trips from 6 April 2020.

A gentle reminder

Turn on one reminder at 6pm, sent only on days when there are trips waiting to be classified.

Kept safe in your iCloud

Your log syncs to your own private iCloud storage, so it's backed up and comes back when you sign in on a new iPhone.

All your vehicles

Cars and vans, motorcycles and bicycles, each at its own HMRC rate. Pause tracking for a day, until Monday, or until a date you choose.

The right rate for every trip

UK tax years run from 6 April to 5 April. Milepost uses the rate for the tax year each trip falls in, so a log that spans 6 April 2026 is priced correctly on both sides.

Rates are from HMRC's mileage rates on GOV.UK. When HMRC changes them, the new rates come in a free app update and your totals are worked out again from your trips.

Private by design

A mileage log is a record of where you go. Milepost keeps it with you.

  • No account. Nothing to sign up for, no email address, no password.
  • On your iPhone. Your trips are stored on your device and in your own private iCloud, which we can't see.
  • No servers of ours. Milepost doesn't send your trips to us. We have nowhere to keep them.
  • No tracking. No analytics, no adverts and no third-party code in the app.

Place names, maps and road distances come from Apple Maps, so the coordinates or search needed for each lookup go to Apple. Read the full privacy notice.

Questions

Is Milepost a subscription?

No. You pay £19.99 once to unlock Milepost, after a 30-day free trial. Nothing renews, and updates to HMRC's rates come free with app updates.

What happens when the free trial ends?

The trial ends on its own and you aren't charged. Milepost keeps recording your drives, and you can still see your trip history and export a CSV of all your trips. Classifying new trips, the PDF and CSV mileage logs, past tax years and extra vehicles need the £19.99 unlock.

Does Milepost use the new 55p rate?

Yes. For trips from 6 April 2026 (tax year 2026/27 onwards), cars and vans are 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p after that. Earlier tax years use 45p and 25p. Milepost picks the rate from each trip's date.

Can I use Milepost as an employee?

Yes. Choose Employee, enter what your employer pays per mile, and Milepost works out the difference between HMRC's rate and what your employer paid for each tax year. That difference is what you can claim as Mileage Allowance Relief, through Self Assessment or form P87.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There's nothing to sign up for. Your trips are kept on your iPhone and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud storage.

Will it drain my battery?

Milepost uses your iPhone's motion data to tell when you're driving, so it records your route with GPS while you drive and stops when you've parked. Between drives it relies on the low-power location alerts built into iOS.

Which phones does Milepost work on?

iPhone, with iOS 18 or later. There isn't an Android or iPad version.

Is Milepost tax advice?

No. Milepost helps you keep records and works out figures at HMRC's published rates. Check HMRC's guidance or ask an accountant if you're not sure what you can claim.
